If you have pain or discomfort in your knee or lower leg and don’t know the cause, you can arrange to have a musculoskeletal scan through Ultrasound Plus. Our team of professional sonographers carries out private knee scans in our state-of-the-art clinics across the Midlands and London/South East, with prices starting from £110.

What can an ultrasound scan on the knee or lower leg identify?

A knee or lower leg ultrasound scan can be used to diagnose a range of different injuries and health conditions that may be causing you discomfort and pain, including:

Lower leg or knee scans carried out by Ultrasound Plus can be used as a diagnostic tool to identify the source of pain or swelling in your knee or lower leg, but we cannot confirm a diagnosis for you. You will need to pass your scan on to your GP, who will be able to confirm a diagnosis and recommend treatment or further scans/tests if necessary.

Non-invasive knee and lower leg MSK ultrasound scans

Ultrasound scans on the knee and  or lower leg are non-invasive and generally pain-free. The gel that is applied to the skin is cold, but this is usually the most discomfort you’ll feel during your appointment. 

Our expert sonographers use the latest ultrasound technology to transform sound wave echoes into detailed images that show soft tissue in your knee.

How long does a private knee scan or lower leg scan take?

Knee or lower leg ultrasounds tend to take 20 minutes from the start of the appointment to the end. 

Who can have a musculoskeletal scan on the knee or lower leg?

Anyone over the age of 18 can make an appointment for a knee or lower leg ultrasound scan at an Ultrasound Plus. You don’t need to get a referral from your GP in order to book a scan with us, but it is recommended that you inform them of your intention to book an ultrasound scan.

We also recommend that you share your results with them so they can diagnose any issues or arrange further testing. It’s your responsibility to pass your scan results onto your GP. 

How much does a lower leg or knee ultrasound cost?

We provide knee or lower leg ultrasounds from £110. If you’re thinking of going down the health insurance route to pay for your scan, you’ll need to check with your insurer that you’re covered before you book, and you should also be prepared and able to pay for the scan before you make an appointment.

Ultrasound FAQs

Yes, you can eat or drink before your scan.
 
All of our sonographers are qualified with diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound scanning experience and are accredited by either the Health Professional Council, The General Medical Council or Society of Radiographers and also work within the NHS alongside their role within Ultrasound Plus.
 
We advise that you wear something light, airy and baggy. Otherwise, you may need to change into a gown if necessary.
 
Please bring along your hospital notes (if you have been given them) and reports to assist out Sonographers if a referral is required.
 
Please note, our scans do not replace any of your NHS scans. During your appointment, in any event of a medical referral being required, we will discuss this with you and provide a full report for you to forward on to your health practitioner.
Yes, our services are a complementary service, which works alongside the NHS.
 
 
We advise all of our customers to advise their GP/Healthcare provider know of their intention to have a scan with us. On arrival at Ultrasound Plus we will ask you to complete a registration form, where your GP/Healthcare provider details will be requested. If from the kidney, ureters & bladder scan there shows a need to contact or share any information regarding your scan, you are responsible for providing the report to your GP/Healthcare provider.
