Our Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing & Scan which provides 99% accuracy!

This is an advanced non-invasive test for Down Syndrome, which looks at detecting the trisomy 21 Down Syndrome, trisomy 18 Edwards Syndrome, trisomy 13 Patau Syndrome and sex chromosome conditions. Our non-invasive prenatal testing & scan is available any time after 10 weeks gestation and should be paired with a dating scan in order to date your pregnancy as accurately as possible.

You will be asked to complete a consent form prior to the blood test being performed. Once these have been signed and the non-invasive prenatal test has taken place, they will be sent to our laboratory to extract the DNA from the blood sample.

To provide a result, there needs to be enough foetal DNA in the maternal blood. If there is not enough, another sample will be required and processed at no extra charge. The results of your NIPT scan will be ready in approximately five to seven working days.

After the non-invasive prenatal test, the number of women required to have a CVS or amniocentesis is less than 1%. It is important to note that if the test results show a high risk of trisomy 21, 18, 13 or sex chromosome conditions, it does not mean that the foetus definitely has one of these conditions, but it is highly likely. In the event of a high-risk result, a follow-up test via an invasive procedure is recommended.

All results should be forwarded onto your GP/midwife for their analysis and to include within the hospital notes. It is your responsibility to ensure they receive the reports from your non-invasive prenatal test. Our scans are performed by highly-qualified sonographers who have extensive obstetric scanning experience.

This package also involves a scan with your NIPT so you can see how your little one is growing.

What is the purpose of a non-invasive prenatal test & scan?

The purpose of an NIPT scan is to test for Down’s Syndrome, Edward’s Syndrome & Patau Syndrome. This test will obtain blood samples which can then be analysed to assess the risk of these syndromes. A scan will also be performed to measure the crown rump length, confirm the foetal age and confirm whether it is a single or multiple pregnancy.

Non-Invasive Prenatal Test & Scan FAQs

Does a low risk result with this non-invasive prenatal test mean that the baby does not have Down’s Syndrome?

Any NIPT screening test carries with it the risk of a false negative. However, this risk of this happening in our non-invasive prenatal test is much lower than the standard down syndrome screening.

If I have a high risk result does that mean that the baby’s chromosomes are abnormal?

No, not necessarily. A high-risk result from your non-invasive prenatal test means there is a higher risk of abnormal chromosomes and you will be offered the option of amniocentesis to assess the chromosomes directly.

Can I have an NIPT scan if I’m having twins?

Yes, you can have the non-invasive prenatal test if you’re having twins.

Is this test available for IVF pregnancies?

Yes, our non-invasive test for down syndrome is suitable for IVF patients.

When will I get my results?

The results of your non-invasive prenatal test will be available in 5-7 working days.

What if my test fails?

3 out of every 100 women will require a repeat test. This could be due to an insufficient level of cell free DNA in your blood sample or it may not pass the quality score. If this happens, another sample will be obtained and sent back to our laboratory. There will be no charge for this.

Can I find out the sex of my baby with this non-invasive test for Down’s Syndrome?

Yes, we will be able to confirm the gender on single and identical twin pregnancies after 16 weeks gestation.

Are there any further tests that can be done with this sample?

Foetal sex chromosomes can also be used to evaluate X and Y sex chromosomes. This option tests for conditions caused by having a missing or extra copy of X and Y chromosomes including Turner and Klinefelter syndrome. This is only available for single pregnancies.

Do I need to drink water before my scan appointment?

Yes, it is recommended that you drink 1 litre of water at least 20 minutes prior to your appointment.

Our friendly sonographers will perform your non-invasive prenatal test and scan and will keep you informed each step of the way. Our sonographers work within the NHS alongside their role in Ultrasound Plus and are accredited by the Health Professional Council, The General Medical Council, Society of Radiographers or the Royal College of Midwives.

Do I still need to visit the NHS if I had a scan with you?
