Private Early Pregnancy Scan

Available from 5 to 8 Weeks Gestation

What does an early pregnancy scan in the UK include?

Available from 5 to 8 weeks gestation, early pregnancy reassurance scans, also known as viability or dating scan, will confirm a pregnancy and the gestation age. We will also provide you with an estimated due date (EDD) at an early pregnancy ultrasound scan.

When you receive your first positive pregnancy test, we understand how much you will want an ultrasound scan to see your baby and check everything is okay. We believe that having a scan during early pregnancy is the right choice; it is available to all women and is recommended for those experiencing pain or do not know when their last menstrual period was.

Early pregnancy scans can be carried out from 5 weeks gestation; however, we would only recommend this to women advised to do so by their GP. Pregnancy ultrasound scans are perfectly safe, providing you with gestational age and accurate results.

You can make an appointment for a private early ultrasound scan in London, Brentwood, Birmingham, Watford, Leicester, or Kingston upon Thames. An early scan will put your mind at ease.

What does our early pregnancy ultrasound scan include?

Have you just found out you’re expecting?

Make it all feel real with our early pregnancy scan from just 5 weeks gestation. Our comfortable private clinic will help make this time even more unique, allowing you to see your pregnancy. Before the six-and-a-half-week mark, we may not be able to see a foetal pole or heartbeat, but a further ultrasound scan will detect this.

Our private early baby scan is recommended if you’re experiencing bleeding or pain, have a history of miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, IVF treatment, or long-term medical conditions. All the baby scans are performed by qualified sonographers who are experienced in the obstetric scanning area.

If this is your first pregnancy, don’t forget you need a full bladder when you come for your first scan, as this is how we can obtain clearer images for you. We recommend that you drink at least one pint (0.5ltr) of water before your scan, so it’s easier for us to see a clear view. If possible, please refrain from emptying your bladder just before your scan. Routinely a trans-vaginal scan will be offered if it is too early.

Early Pregnancy Ultrasound

An early pregnancy scan looks to verify the viability of your pregnancy and confirm the gestation age. Measurement of the gestation sac will be taken, and, if seen, the crown-rump length will also be measured.

From six and a half weeks onward, we will also look to detect the foetal heartbeat so you can see your baby in the womb. For a multiple pregnancy scan, if known, this will incur an extra fee of £25.

Early pregnancy scan FAQs

Yes, it is recommended that you drink approximately one pint of water at least 20 minutes before your scan. We recommend that you drink as much as you can but don’t make yourself uncomfortable. It is best if you do not empty your bladder before your scan.

We have a team of qualified sonographers who will provide your early pregnancy scan. They have extensive experience in ultrasound scanning and are accredited by either the Health Professional Council, the General Medical Council, or the Society of Radiographers. They work with the NHS alongside their role in our Ultrasound Plus clinics.

No, an internal scan will only be performed if it is necessary; however, we do find that internal investigations can provide clearer views of your growing baby. The sonographer will discuss this with you before any internal examination to obtain your consent.

Please be sure to bring your hospital notes (if you have them) to your appointment, as this will help assist our sonographers if a referral is needed.

It is too early to see any anomalies on a fetus at this stage, however if any unusual findings are found during your early pregnancy scan, we will be sure to discuss this with you and provide a full report, which will be forwarded to your health practitioner.

Yes. We provide a complimentary service that works alongside the NHS, so it is important you still go to your NHS scan.

We advise all our customers to make sure their GP/healthcare provider knows they intend to have a scan with us. When you arrive at your early pregnancy scan appointment, we will ask you to complete a registration form that requests your GP/healthcare provider details. If you find your GP/healthcare provider needs to be contacted due to something found in your scan, you will be responsible for doing so.

You will need to pay for your early pregnancy scan at Ultrasound Plus directly and an invoice will be provided. Any claims made are based on the insurance company’s decision. Ultrasound Plus advises you to double-check whether your medical insurance will cover your early pregnancy scan price.

We’re more than happy to accommodate up to four guests during your appointment. We know this is a special moment that you will want to share with your family and friends, so just be sure to make us aware of any guests you’re bringing before your scan so we can facilitate this.

An early pregnancy scan, also known as a viability or dating scan, is an ultrasound examination that is performed to confirm pregnancy, establish an estimated due date, and determine the location of the pregnancy. The scan typically involves the use of a transducer, which is placed on the abdomen, to produce images of the developing foetus and placenta. The scan is usually performed in the first trimester of pregnancy, typically between 6 and 12 weeks.

An early pregnancy scan can be performed as early as 6 weeks of pregnancy. However, the accuracy of the scan may be limited at this stage, and a repeat scan may be needed to confirm the pregnancy and establish a due date.

An early pregnancy scan can provide valuable information about the health and development of the foetus, including the due date, the number of foetuses present, and the location of the pregnancy. It can also help to detect any potential problems or complications, such as an ectopic pregnancy or a miscarriage.

Ultrasound is generally considered to be a safe and non-invasive procedure. However, as with any medical procedure, there are some potential risks and side effects, such as discomfort or pain from the transducer being pressed against the skin.

The results of an early pregnancy scan will typically include images of the developing foetus and a report containing measurements that can be used to establish an estimated due date. The practitioner performing the scan may also be able to determine the number of foetuses present, and may be able to detect any potential problems or complications.

An early pregnancy scan typically takes between 10-20 minutes.

During an early pregnancy scan, you will lie on your back and a gel will be applied to your abdomen. The practitioner will then use a transducer to produce images of the developing foetus and placenta. You may be able to see the images on a screen during the scan.

Practitioners who perform early pregnancy scans are typically obstetricians, midwives, or sonographers. They will have received specialised training in ultrasound technology and will be certified in obstetric ultrasound.

An early pregnancy scan can detect an ectopic pregnancy, which occurs when the fertilised egg implants somewhere other than the uterus, such as in the fallopian tube. However, an ectopic pregnancy may not always be visible on an early scan and a repeat scan may be necessary.

You are required to come with a full bladder before an early pregnancy scan. However, it is a good idea to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.

There are usually no specific aftercare instructions to follow after an early pregnancy scan. You can resume your normal activities immediately following the procedure.

“We have now had 3 scans at the Brentwood branch, and the staff are lovely! This has been our favourite private clinic.. the sonographer Teresa is lovely, she explains everything in so much detail and doesn’t rush through the scan! No doubt we will be back again before our baby comes.”
