3D ultrasounds allow you to see your baby in lifelike still images...

Whereas 4D ultrasounds show you your baby moving in real time in clear detail. These scans use a similar level of intensity as 2D ultrasounds but they open up a whole new way to experience and cherish the joy of your new family addition.

All of our 3D/4D ultrasounds are performed by qualified sonographers who have extensive obstetric scanning experience. We recommend that you always pass on the information found in your scan to your GP/Healthcare provider to ensure a healthy pregnancy all around.

What is the purpose of a 3D/4D ultrasound?

The purpose of both a 3D ultrasound and a 4D ultrasound is to obtain 3D images and footage of your unborn baby. Growth measurements of the baby at the expected gestation age will be taken and the estimated foetal weight will be confirmed. The position of the baby will also be identified and we will also confirm whether you are having a little boy or girl if requested.

Further Information

4D refers to ‘real time’ moving of your unborn baby and 3D images are still images. Allowing you to see your baby in clear detail moving in similar ways to a newborn. Using a similar level of intensity as 2D ultrasound, the 3D and 4D scan opens up a whole way to experience, share and cherish the joy of your new family addition.

All scans are performed by a qualified sonographers with diagnostic obstetric scanning experience.

Please note that we recommend that you forward your report/findings to your GP/Healthcare.

3D/4D ultrasound FAQs

When is the best time to get a 3D/4D ultrasound?

We would recommend booking your ultrasound for between 25 to 32 weeks to obtain the best images of your baby. For multiple pregnancies, we would recommend between 18 to 24 weeks so there is more room to see your babies. At this stage, the baby/babies are big but still have enough space to move around.

How can I get the best 3D/4D ultrasound images?

3D and 4D ultrasounds rely on the size and position of your baby, the amount of fluid around the baby and/or maternal abdominal fat. Therefore, a few things can be done to obtain the clearest 3D baby scan images. For example, if the baby is not in the right position, we will ask you to take a short walk or move around to encourage the baby to move. If this does not improve the baby’s position after this, we will schedule a further appointment at no extra cost.

What happens if you cannot get 3D/4D images of the baby during the appointment?

If your baby or babies do not feel up to a photoshoot on the day of the scan, after a minimum of 2 attempts, we will invite you back another day at no extra cost. Patients are advised that they will be charged a minimum of £80 for the reassurance side of the package at the first appointment but will not be charged for any rescan dates following. Additional keepsakes will be charged separately upon purchase.

If, after numerous attempts, we still cannot provide the 3D/4D package as requested, with your consent we will downscale the package to a basic version. If no 3D/4D imagery can be obtained, your package can be reduced to a 2D package, with the minimum being a reassurance scan.

Why are 3D and 4D ultrasounds performed earlier for multiple pregnancies?

Because multiple babies take up more room in your womb, it is harder to obtain good 3D/4D imagery of them during your scan. It is quite common that with multiple pregnancies, at least one baby will be in a difficult position. Therefore, it is recommended to perform a 3D/4D earlier in these circumstances to gain the best images or video of both babies.

Are there any risks to the baby during 3D/4D ultrasounds?

3D ultrasounds and 4D ultrasounds pose no risk to the baby. Ultrasound technology has been around for over 30 years and is believed to be a very safe method of looking at an unborn foetus in the womb.
Research has proven 3D/4D scans provide additional psychological and health benefits for both parents and child. In 2010, the HPA also issued a report explaining that parents should be made aware of any uncertainties in a 4D scan. So, if you do have any concerns, please consult your GP, midwife or our sonographers prior to your scan about the safety of the ultrasound.

How many guests/children can come with me?

We’re happy for friends and family to attend your appointment with you. We are able to facilitate up to five guests at one appointment.

Who will perform my 3D/4D ultrasound?

Your 3D ultrasound or 4D ultrasound will be performed by one of our qualified sonographers who are qualified with diagnostic ultrasound scanning experience. They are all either accredited by the Health Professional Council, The General Medical Council, Society of Radiographers or the Royal College of Midwives and work within the NHS alongside their role at Ultrasound Plus.

What do I need to bring to my appointment?

Make sure you bring along your hospital notes to help assist our sonographers if you require a referral.

Will you advise me of any abnormalities spotted during my ultrasound?

If any abnormalities are found during your 3D/4D scan, we will be sure to discuss this with you in full. We will also provide a full report for you to forward to your health practitioner. However, please note that our ultrasounds do not replace the ones provided by the NHS and you should still go to these.

Do I still need to visit the NHS if I had a scan with you?

Yes, you still need to go to your NHS scans even if you’ve had a 4D or 3D scan with us. Ultrasound Plus provides a complimentary service which works alongside the NHS.
